William Morton Mackay, the author of this monogram, has in his own career replicated some of the features that were prominent in the life of Thomas Chalmers.

Like Chalmers he has combined zeal for the Church of Christ and practical involvement in the education of youth. After studies in St Andrews University where he took honours in history and geography, he taught for a short time in Fife and then took up an appointment in the Colegio San Andrés, Lima, Peru, a boys' school founded and managed by the Free Church of Scotland.

He soon became headmaster of that school, one of the foremost in Peru, and returned only two years ago after about 17 years' service there. His work in Peru was not confined to the school as he took full part in the general missionary work of the Free Church in that country and is still a source of information and counsel in the onward planning of mission activity. So well known has his work as Christian educationist become that his services are presently being sought for the headship of one of the leading schools in Australia.
